othello Essay Example
othello Essay The Theme of Quest Explored in Araby and Atonement In James Joyces Araby and Ian McEwans Atonement both authors express that that the characters mature and grow through quests. In Joyces Araby the boy goes on a quest to the bazaar to meet Managans sisters whom he is very interested in. However, because he is a young boy and does not leave his much, and has no source of income there are limitations on his freedom, which ultimately affect his quest. In McEwans Atonement Briony goes through a life near long quest in an attempt to epair the damage in which she inflicted on her sister Cecelia, Robbie and her family. However, similar to the predicament the boy from Joyces Araby goes through, Briony is never able to formally make amends between Cecelia and Robbie because both died in the war. In Joyces Araby the boy wants to go to the bazaar and meet Managans sister. As stated by the boy in Araby l asked for leave to got to the bazaar on Saturday night. My aunt was surprised and hoped it was not some Freemanson affair. I answered a few questions in class. I watched my masters face pass amiability to sternness; he hoped I was I was not beginning to idle. I could not call my wandering thoughts together. (93 Joyce) This quote shows that the boy is expressing his independence so that he can go and fulfill his quest to meet Managans sister at the bazaar. Joyce adds the details about the boys aunt being surprised that the boy would ask such a thing ecause Joyce is showing the reader that the boy has never asked to go do something like this on his own, he expresses that he is an adolescent and by asking his aunt go to the bazaar he is maturing and growing as a person. Also another key detail that the boy is growing as a person as a result of his quest is because he is experiencing feelings for Managans sister. As stated in Araby: A Quest for Meaning by John Freimarck In Araby the boy ignores the reality of his bleak, winter surroundings and allows the word araby to suggest the exciting Summer world of romance. Freimarck 366) In this quote Freimarck is exploring the idea that the boy is growing up because he is experiencing the feelings of love and romance, feelings that are only experienced by adults. Thus this shows that because of the boys quest to go the bazaar and meet Managans sister the boy shows that he is growing up and maturing and it is shows through his actions and his feelings. In McEwans Atonement Briony, as a young child, makes a terrible mistake of accusing Robbie of rape, a crime in which he did not commit and because of these accusations he goes to Jail. She destroys her relationship with her sister Cecelia, Robbie and her family. As stated by Briony in Atonement A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended. (McEwan) In this quote McEwan makes a comparison to the reader that once a material object is broken it is very difficult to pick up the pieces and put it back together and make it look like it was repair it to a point as if nothing happened at all, which is what Briony is on a quest for. By Briony accepting the fact that that her relationship will never be the same ith Cecelia, Robbie, or her family is a part of the growing process of accepting the responsibility for what she did and realizing things will never be the same. Also, by Briony is on a quest, trying desperately to make amends with Cecelia, Robbie and her family shows real signs of growth and maturity in Briony. Throughout much of her adult life Briony is on quest to make things right between her Cecelia Robbie and the rest of her family. As stated by Peter Mathews in his The Impression of Deeper Darkness: Ian McEwans Atonement It is her torturous longing or atonement that places Briony in a kind of psychological hell. McEwan symbolizes this agony in a subtle but consistent foregrounding of the symbolic number three. Mathews 156) In this quote Mathews is telling the reader that throughout Brionys quest she is being tortured because she fails to personally make amends to all those whom she hurt when she blatantly lied about what really happened that night with Robbie. However, because she was tortured for so long during her quest she has grown and matured because of it. In both Araby and Atonement the theme of quest lays a major role in the d evelopment and maturity in both Briony and the boy. Through their experiences on their quests both characters grew and matured from adolescent children into adults. In the case of Briony she grows on her quest through suffering because she will never have the chance to make amends with Cecilia and Robbie because they each died prematurely. In the case of the boy in Araby he grows through expressing his independence to go to the bazaar with Managans sister. In the end each both Briony and the boy both grow as people as a result of their quests.

The African Union Organization
The African Union Organization The African Union is one of the worlds most important intergovernmental organizations. It is composed of 53 countries in Africa and is loosely based on the European Union. These African countries work diplomatically with each other despite differences in geography, history, race, language, and religion to try to improve the political, economic, and social situations for the approximately one billion people that live on the African continent. The African Union promises to protect Africas rich cultures, some of which have existed for thousands of years. African Union Membership The African Union, or AU, includes every independent African country except Morocco. Additionally, the African Union recognizes the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is a portion of Western Sahara; this recognition by the AU caused Morocco to resign. South Sudan is the newest member of the African Union, joining on July 28, 2011, less than three weeks after it became an independent country. The OAU: The Precursor to the African Union The African Union was formed after the dissolution of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 2002. The OAU was formed in 1963 when many African leaders wanted to accelerate the process of European decolonization and gain independence for a number of new nations. It also wanted to promote peaceful solutions to conflicts, ensure sovereignty forever, and raise living standards. However, the OAU was largely criticized from the beginning. Some countries still had deep ties to its colonial masters. Many countries associated themselves with the ideologies of either the United States or the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. Although the OAU gave weapons to rebels and was successful in eliminating colonization, it could not eliminate the massive poverty problem. Its leaders were seen as corrupt and unconcerned for the welfare of the common people. Many civil wars occurred and the OAU could not intervene. In 1984, Morocco left the OAU because it opposed the membership of Western Sahara. In 1994, South Africa joined the OAU after the fall of apartheid. The African Union Is Founded Years later, Libyas leader Muammar Gaddafi, a strong proponent of African unity, encouraged the revival and improvement of the organization. After several conventions, the African Union was formed in 2002. The headquarters of the African Union is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its official languages are English, French, Arabic, and Portuguese, but many documents are also printed in Swahili and local languages. The leaders of the African Union work together to promote health, education, peace, democracy, human rights, and economic success. Three AU Administrative Bodies The heads of state of each member country form the AU Assembly. These leaders meet semi-annually to discuss the budget and major goals of peace and development. The current leader of the African Union Assembly is Bingu Wa Mutharika, the President of Malawi. The AU Parliament is the legislative body of the African Union and is composed of 265 officials who represent the common people of Africa. Its seat is in Midrand, South Africa. The African Court of Justice works to ensure that human rights for all Africans are respected. The Improvement of Human Life in Africa The African Union strives to improve every aspect of government and human life on the continent. Its leaders try to improve educational and career opportunities for ordinary citizens. It works to get healthy food, safe water, and adequate housing to the poor, especially in times of disaster. It studies the causes of these problems, like famine, drought, crime, and war. Africa has a high population that suffers from diseases like HIV, AIDS, and malaria, so the African Union tries to give treatment to the afflicted and provide education to prevent the spread of these diseases. The Improvement of Government, Finances, and Infrastructure The African Union supports agricultural projects. It works to improve transportation and communication and promotes scientific, technological, industrial, and environmental advancement. Financial practices like free trade, customs unions, and central banks are planned. Tourism and immigration ââ¬â¹are promoted, as well as better uses of energy and the protection of Africas precious natural resources such as gold. Environmental problems like desertification are studied, and Africas livestock resources are given aid. The Improvement of Security A major goal of the African Union is to encourage the collective defense, security, and stability of its members. The African Unions democratic principles have gradually reduced corruption and unfair elections. It tries to prevent conflicts between member nations and solve any disputes that do arise quickly and peacefully. The African Union can grant sanctions on disobedient states and withhold economic and social benefits. It does not tolerate inhumane acts such as genocide, war crimes, and terrorism. The African Union can intervene militarily and has sent peacekeeping troops to alleviate political and social disorder in places like Darfur (Sudan), Somalia, Burundi, and Comoros. However, some of these missions have been criticized as being too underfunded, undermanned, and untrained. A few nations, like Niger, Mauritania, and Madagascar have been suspended from the organization after political events like coup detats. Foreign Relations of the African Union The African Union works closely with diplomats from the United States, European Union, and United Nations. It receives aid from countries around the world to deliver on its promises of peace and health for all Africans. The African Union realizes that its member nations must unite and cooperate to compete in the worlds increasingly globalized economy and foreign relations. It hopes to have a single currency, like the euro, by 2023. An African Union passport may exist one day. In the future, the African Union hopes to benefit people of African origin living throughout the world. African Union Struggles Linger The African Union has improved stability and welfare, but it does have its challenges. Poverty is still a tremendous problem. The organization is deeply in debt and many consider some of its leaders to still be corrupt. Moroccos tension with Western Sahara continues to strain the entire organization. However, several smaller multi-state organizations exist in Africa, like the East African Community and the Economic Community of West African States, so the African Union can study how successful these smaller regional organizations have been in combating poverty and political strife. Conclusion In conclusion, the African Union comprises all but one of Africas countries. Its goal of integration has fostered one identity and has enhanced the political, economic, and social climate of the continent, thereby giving hundreds of millions of people a healthier and more successful future.

Privacy and Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Privacy and Security - Essay Example The leaked documents revealed operational details of a global surveillance apparatus run by the NSA and other members of the Five Eyes alliance, along with numerous commercial and international partners.[3]The public and government officials are divided on the rightness and legality of these programs, but President Barack Obama defends their constitutionality, urgency, and effectiveness as he believes in the tradeoffs between security and privacy. Other commentators claim that privacy should not be traded off in any way for better security. It is argued that the need for security is not threatening Americansââ¬â¢ right to privacy because the state is balancing them in the best way possible. The need for security is paramount, however, and should override privacy concerns because it only preserves public safety by reasonable authority, surveillance, and approval of Congress, some politicians, and courts. The need for security is not threatening Americansââ¬â¢ right to privacy because the state is doing its best to balance both interests. First, President Obama himself assured the public that it is not listening into every call that Americans make. Wiretapping and listening to other data can be considered as a ââ¬Å"searchâ⬠that can breach the Fourth Amendment, but this is not what the government is doing. Instead, the government is only studying data trends. Lara Jakes and Darlene Superville report on the specific procedures of the government, clarifying that the program does not include listening into calls, but only monitoring the origin and duration of calls. This means that the government is not fully breaching privacy rights. The article no longer explained though how data trends and call location can identify suspicious activities. Jakes and Superville add that if there are specific numbers that are perceived as suspicious of terrorist intentions, intelligence offici als ââ¬Å"must return to court to get approvalâ⬠before

Ethical Reasoning in Business Decisions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Ethical Reasoning in Business Decisions - Essay Example In the research, the emphasis is given on the use of ethical reasoning for developing important business decisions. The specific issue is reviewed using as an example the marketing plan of a tobacco firm, GB Tobacco, especially in regard to South East Asia. The decisions of the firmââ¬â¢s manager Fiona Fuller are analyzed through appropriate theory. Recommendations are made for potential alternatives and changes, where necessary so that the firmââ¬â¢s marketing plan in South East Asia is not opposed to ethics. As explained in the case study, Fiona Fuller has to face a significant challenge in the short term: she has to identify a strategy for enhancing the growth of the firmââ¬â¢s profits. The market of South East Asia seems to be an ideal place for achieving such target since elsewhere the perspectives for the firmââ¬â¢s growth are limited mostly due to the changes in the legislation related to tobacco products. The options proposed by Suppakorn would be evaluated using the Seven Step model, a theoretical framework that allows the identification of ethical dilemmas and constraints in regard to critical business decisions. The Seven Step Model of ethical decision making would help Fiona Fuller to develop ethical decisions. The specific model incorporates seven phases, which can be described as follows: a) Identification of the facts, meaning those issues that can be considered as having ethical implications. In the specific case, these facts are: in Malu existing legislation bans the import of cigarettes; still, the unregulated market is well developed. As a result, the import of cigarettes in the country needs to be necessarily developed through smuggling distributors in neighboring regions. The marketing strategy of GB Tobacco needs to be designed taking into consideration the above fact, i.e. the non-legal import of the firmââ¬â¢s products in the market of Malu.

UK Government Urban Policy Agenda Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
UK Government Urban Policy Agenda - Essay Example The implication of various reports that have been projecting the growth of population in UK is increased house-building especially on undeveloped green fields. Every incoming government has been targeting to increase the number of houses in the cities in order to solve the housing problem. However, according to the Urban Task Force, these interventions are insufficient. This is because an appropriate strategy must address the increasing level of dissatisfaction among the city residents. Many of these people feel that little attention is being directed towards making city life better . Therefore, there is an argument that the policies should not only focus on accommodating people in urban areas, but also make the cities attractive for the people living in them. The last governmentââ¬â¢s urban policy agenda failed to achieve the set objectives. For instance, in 1999, the Regional Development Agencies was launched. The main aim was to transform the UKââ¬â¢s regions through sustainable economic development. This is through creating the right conditions for growth and bringing expertise to the task of economic regeneration and development. This is through improving the physical infrastructure and providing the necessary support to the people. In 2002-2007, the agency received a large amount of money from the government.

Can Go Issues And Solutions
Can Go Issues And Solutions One of CanGo division is an online book store. Best sellers are kept in the warehouse grouped by subject, while other titles are ordered from publishers or other sources. The current process involves pickers getting lists with titles that have been ordered and then picking them from inventory. The issues with this system are that the lists are random and congestion. This is because a picker may have to go from one end of the warehouse to the other and back again when fulfilling an order. In addition, multiple pickers often end up in the same place at the same time causing congestion. If the picking process is improved, it would mean CanGo can carry more inventory and decrease the amount of time it takes to get books to customers. Solution 1 CanGo has presented a proposal to purchase an automatic storage and retrieval system (ASRS) to streamline the picking process. An ASRS is a system that uses technology for depositing and retrieving inventory from a defined storage location. There are several benefits to an ASRS including better use of both space and labor, and it improves the company control of the materials CanGo needs to consider several things when designing a system. These include the material to be moved, numbers of load to be stored, material flow description, description of operations, and architectural consideration for future expansion (ASRS, 1999). It is obvious that CanGo deals with books but it is important to know the weight and the dimensions of the books. Material flow description or flow charts illustrate how the books get from the starting point to the outbound truck, including a description of what the operator does and shows places where a logjam may occur. Architectural consideration means that the size of the building may place limits on what system CanGo uses. There are several manufactures of ASRS systems. One is Cisco Eagle and its mini storage system (Cisco eagle mini load). Material is placed in a tote, a tray or a carton. Storage can be single, double or triple deep. In conclusion a good ASRS system will lower storage costs and enable the work force to be more productive. Problem 2 CanGo continues to strive to increase their sales and to work through their growing pains that are often experienced by new companies. Like many startup companies, CanGo is faced with the prospect of large investments back into the company in order to increase production and streamline the delivery system. One issue that CanGo needs to rectify is the number of abandoned shopping carts that the company is experiencing. According to a recent survey conducted by Comscore, 76% of orders are abandoned. This is because the educated consumer of today continues to comparison shop throughout the checkout process. While CanGo has experienced a smaller percentage of abandoned orders, the problem is still prevalent. Solution 2 East Coast Consulting simulated the purchasing process on CanGos website and offers the following recommendations. Review the pricing of items that are offered. If an item is the same or similar as to what is offered on other sites, the consumer will shop by price alone. Offer a clearance or sale area in order to entice shoppers. Offer free shipping. 76% of consumers rate free shipping as a must for online orders. According to David Bell of Wharton, For whatever reason, a free shipping offer that saves customers 6.99 in shipping is more appealing to many than a discount that cuts the purchase price by $10 Eliminate the need to register in order to check out. This requires too much information from the customer and takes too much time. Provide the option of Guest check out. Remember that in order to follow up on abandoned orders, an email address must be obtained. This should be the first field presented to the customer upon checkout. Build trust and eliminate doubt with customers. This can be accomplished by addressing frequently asked questions, clearly stating the return and privacy policy and a security guarantee. Also, CanGo needs to prominently show the company information including an email and phone number. Implement Live Chat. In a recent survey, 77% of retailers listed Live Chat as critical to converting the shopping cart into sales. Offer more payment options including PayPal and Amazon Checkout. Also provide clear instructions on providing credit card information. Simplify this process as much as possible and make the checkout button a clear call to action. We feel these recommendations will greatly improve the conversion rate at CanGo. Problem 3 One of the main problem that Can Go is facing is making their website user friendly and more appealing, At this point, nearly every company has a website, and for good reason. Potential customers and clients use sites to learn about the company, but also to get a general feeling about service and culture. If Can Go makes their website user friendly and attractive then customer would definitely come back and buy the service. Solution 3 Although a fantastic-looking website can be powerful, design isnt the first place to start when it comes to user experience. Because businesses need to understand their consumers in order to develop products and marketing campaigns that appeal to their target audience, consumer psychologists often spend a great deal of time learning more about what makes shoppers tick. This often involves first figuring out the target audience for a particular product including the gender, age and socioeconomic status of the typical shopper. Next, the consumer psychologist might begin researching the types of products and marketing messages that appeal to these types of buyers. Other consumer psychologists might focus on social marketing, or how ideas and messages spread among groups. Researchers might be interested in getting out information about a product or an important public health message. Learning how beliefs andÃâà attitude spread among groups can help organizations learns how to better get their message out and encourage word-of-mouth marketing. Consumer psychologists often conduct research to learn more about buyer behavior. Common research methods used by these professionals include experiments, phone surveys, focus groups, direct observation and questionnaires. Chances are good that you have participated in at least one market research survey in your life. These are often conducted by phone, but may also be done online or through direct mail. In a survey, consumers are often asked to describe their past shopping behavior, factors that influenced their decision-making and their future buying plans. Researchers also typically gather details about each respondents sex, age, race, educational history and current financial situation. This type of information can be very useful, since it allows researchers to look for patterns and learn more about who buys certain products. For example, using a survey might allow researchers to discover that women between the ages of 30 and 45 who have a household income between $50,000 to $100,000 are most likely to buy a particular product or service. By knowing this, they can then begin designing marketing campaigns aimed at this target audience. Learning these aspects will definitely help Can Go to help better their business. Problem 4 CanGo has spent a lot of time trying to meet the needs of their current customers and have done very well at that. Recently, CanGo began research to understand their current customers purchasing habits and the changing and evolving ecommerce market. For CanGo to remain successful, they must understand the new target market. It is very well known that customer retention is imperative to be successful and without doing the proper research, CanGo will not be effective at holding on to their current customers or gaining new ones. This will ultimately make them a failure with the new product and it could cause them to go under for a lack of being able to gain new customers for the current market. Solution 4 CanGo needs to take a look at it current customers first. Then they need to understand what the age group of its current shoppers is and what they are purchasing. Then CanGo can identify any buying habits. This will help CanGo with their advertising and marketing. This can also help with planning so that their customers will not be impacted by a lack of product. CanGo will also need to identify the target market for online gaming. Doing market research will help CanGo by answering certain questions. What age group of people likes to play games online? What time of day do they like to play these games and how often. How much do online gamers pay for this service? What does the current competition offer? This way they can better understand the new target market as well as the old one. Problem 5 CanGo recently experienced an increase in orders from Japan. When the company received the occasional order from Japan, it was economical to send via UPS. Now, with the increase in sales to Japan, it makes sense to look into companies that specialize in business shipments to Japan. CanGo also should learn all it can about Japanese shipping regulations. Solution 5 CanGo should seek to partner with several companies that specialize in business shipments to Japan. One company is Best Shipping (Best shipping). According to their website, Best Shipping not only accepts imports, but they are licensed customer brokers. They are able to navigate the Japanese shipping rules and regulations and have its own fleet of trucks. This means that one company will have control of the shipment from the time merchandise leaves CanGo until it arrives at the customers door. Another company that specializes in shipping to Japan is Yamato Transport Inc. There office is located in Secaucus, New Jersey and specialize in air and ocean freight, international moving and import and export custom clearing services in the US. The company has several businesses that specialize in door to door shipments in a particular region of Japan. Large American based shipping companies like UPS and Fed Ex have experience serving the Japanese market and should be part of CanGos rotation of Japanese shippers. Although the shipping companies are experts in Japanese shipping rules and will handle most of the details, it is helpful to know the basics. Jetro.org, Japans external trade organization, offers useful information for US companies doing business in Japan. Problem 6 CanGo is spending time to fix all of the things that are not currently working. In doing so there has not been any update on what they are going to do to get the new product line off the ground. Has research been done to see if there is a competitor out in the online gaming market? What type of computer system is needed to handle online gamers? Is CanGos security tight enough to handle the hackers? What is needed to get the online gaming up and running? Does CanGo have enough capital to make this happen? These are all questions that have not been answered. CanGo has not assigned any specific people to the new project. This is going to be a lot of work and take a lot of time. The marketing department also needs to focus on who they are marketing to and how they are going to market to them. Solution 6 So that the team stays focused at a time like this there should be weekly meeting on what is going on with the new project what needs to be done. Deadlines need to be set. This way it is clear that CanGo has not decided not to do the project and that this needs to be done in addition to the corrections to the current process. This way it is clear to all what the goal is. This will help the workers not lose sight of what is important and what needs to be done. CanGo need to make a Gantt chart so the time line of what needs to be done. This will also help assign people to specific task. When CanGo does this it will make it clear to all what needs to be done and who is going to do it. Once it is clear to everyone who is doing what, CanGo needs to look at what they are looking to sell. A Gantt chart would be beneficial to help assign people to specific task and provide clear goals and time frame for completion. In Closing it is important for CanGo to focus on now and the future. That means looking at what is happening to maintain the current customers and drive new ones. East Coast Consulting has provided 6 problems and 6 solutions that will allow CanGo to get once set closer to getting where they want to be. References ASRS. (1999, May 27). herody Essay on Homers Odyssey: Odysseus and the Heroic Cycle :: Homer Odyssey Essays
Odysseus and the Heroic Cycle in Homer's Odyssey "The hero with a thousand faces" written by Joseph Campbell, describes the path a person takes as he journeys through the heroic cycle. Throughout the Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero. Odysseus fulfils the requirements of the Heroic Journey. "A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonderâÃâ à ¦The hero comes back from his mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons upon his fellow man"(J.C.30) Odysseus accomplishes the heroic cycle through the steps of Departure, Fulfillment, and Return. Odysseus departure from Troy is the beginning of his long heroic adventure. "What of those years of rough adventure, weathered under Zeus?"(895) This quote depicts the rough times Odysseus will have on his journey, but also reveals that Zeus will watch over him. "The call to Adventure signifies that destiny has summoned the hero and transferred his spiritual center of gravity from within the pale of his society to a zone unknownâÃâ à ¦"(58) Odysseus will cross the threshold and go places no one has returned from before. On the island of the Cyclops Odysseus exhibits his abilities, as he developed a plan to escape the Cyclops' cave. "âÃâ à ¦I deemed it would be the best plan to do as follows. The Cyclops had a great club which was lying near one of the sheep pens;âÃâ à ¦ I went up to this club and cut off about six feet of it;âÃâ à ¦ lastly I brought it to a point myself, charring the end in the fire to make it harder. When I had done t his I hid it under dung, which was lying about all over the caveâÃâ à ¦"(book IX) Odysseus has this plan and utilizes it. He and most of his men escape the cave unharmed. This symbolized the escape from the "belly of the whale". Throughout his journey, Odysseus receives some help from supernatural powers, which aid him to fulfill the heroic cycle. Aeolus, the god of winds Presents Odysseus with a bag, filled with all the bad winds. "âÃâ à ¦When I said I must go, and asked him to further me on my way, he made no sort of difficulty, but set about doing so at once.
